Police Kill Black Man in Charlotte North Carolina, Unruly Protests Break Out

Keith Scott, a 40-something year old black father waiting to pick up his son near the state university in Charlotte was shot and killed by black police officer Brentley Vinson at about 4 PM yesterday. Police claim that the man got out of his vehicle with a gun then reentered it. Police approached and the man exited the vehicle again. The family claims that the man was disabled and was reading a book in his car.

A live Facebook video apparently from the man’s daughter on the scene has received 680k views as of this morning. The lengthy video went ‘viral’ and can also be found on YouTube. The daughter shouted throughout the video:

I wonder what the fv@k they putting in that truck because that shxX in there — my daddy ain’t got no mother-fv@king gun. Look. Planting shxX. Cause that’s what the fv@k you all do… Yeah, they shot my mother-fv@king daddy four times. They shot him four times and tasered his ass… They run up on the car, tell him to get out of the car, ‘Put your hands up.’ My daddy ain’t doing nothing. They just pulled up undercover…

My mother-fv@king daddy is definitely disabled. What fv@king gun he had. He in the damn car, reading a fv@king book. Y’all mother fv@kers run up on him cause he black. Cause he fv@king black…

The daughter hears the news that her father is deceased during the video and eventually begins crying and yelling, “My daddy is dead!” Meanwhile, police claim that Keith Scott was not the suspect they were looking for.

As the news got out on Facebook and Twitter, protestors quickly gathered in the area.

Adding fuel to the fire, a story was published at the Charlotte Observer as the protests were growing: “Police accidentally record themselves making up charges against protestor.”

Three Connecticut police officers are accused of fabricating charges against a man who was protesting DUI checkpoints police action after their conversation was unknowingly captured on video…

Within a few hours the crowd grew. Protestors threw rocks and attacked police cars. Interstate 85 was closed both ways by the protestors and police. Police used tear gas, flash bangs, and rubber bullets and ordered the crowd dispersed.

The nearby Wal-Mart store was vandalized, and police lined up to prevent people from entering.

As of now, there is no video of the actual incident. The officer who shot the man has been placed on “administrative leave” as per usual police policy in the early stages of these investigations. Police report 12 officers injured. Other reports indicate 11 protestors injured. One officer may have been seriously hurt when hit by a rock or brick; other injuries have not been described.

On social media so far, most of those commenting have chosen a side to support or oppose despite the lack of good information about the incident.
